چکیده
Abstract Using the recently developed theory of rigorously validated numerics, we address phase-field-crystal model at microscopic (atomistic) level. We show existence critical points and local minimizers associated with ‘classical’ candidates, grain boundaries, localized patterns. further dynamical relationships between observed patterns for fixed parameters across parameter space, then formulate several conjectures on connections (or orbits) steady states.

Polymorphism, crystal nucleation and growth in the phase-field crystal model in 2D and 3D.
We apply a simple dynamical density functional theory, the phase-field crystal (PFC) model of overdamped conservative dynamics, to address polymorphism, crystal nucleation, and crystal growth in the diffusion-controlled limit. We refine the phase diagram for 3D, and determine the line free energy in 2D and the height of the nucleation barrier in 2D and 3D for homogeneous and heterogeneous nucle...
متن کاملDerivation of the phase-field-crystal model for colloidal solidification.
The phase-field-crystal model is by now widely used in order to predict crystal nucleation and growth. For colloidal solidification with completely overdamped individual particle motion, we show that the phase-field-crystal dynamics can be derived from the microscopic Smoluchowski equation via dynamical density-functional theory. The different underlying approximations are discussed. In particu...
متن کاملAn efficient algorithm for solving the phase field crystal model
We present and discuss the development of an unconditionally stable algorithm used to solve the evolution equations of the Phase Field Crystal (PFC) model. This algorithm allows for an arbitrarily large algorithmic time step. As the basis for our analysis of the accuracy of this algorithm, we determine an effective time step in Fourier space. We then compare our calculations with a set of repre...
متن کاملAmplitude expansion of the binary phase-field-crystal model.
Amplitude representations of a binary phase-field-crystal model are developed for a two-dimensional triangular lattice and three-dimensional bcc and fcc crystal structures. The relationship between these amplitude equations and the standard phase-field models for binary-alloy solidification with elasticity are derived, providing an explicit connection between phase-field-crystal and phase-field...
متن کاملDiffusion-controlled anisotropic growth of stable and metastable crystal polymorphs in the phase-field crystal model.
We use a simple density functional approach on a diffusional time scale, to address freezing to the body-centered cubic (bcc), hexagonal close-packed (hcp), and face-centered cubic (fcc) structures. We observe faceted equilibrium shapes and diffusion-controlled layerwise crystal growth consistent with two-dimensional nucleation. The predicted growth anisotropies are discussed in relation with r...
